Tons of ideas on Pinterest that include a Sharpie, a Goodwill/Dollar Store mug, and an oven bake at 300 for 35 minutes.
This tutorial from DesignMom. She uses a Black Pebeo Porcelaine Pen in Fine Point instead of a Sharpie.
Lastly, another idea that might send you straight to Goodwill. Buy ONE night stand, paint it and divide it into two for one nightstand for each side of the bed. Super cute idea from HGTV.
